Right now a few of our servers are under an unplanned emergency maintenance. Many accounts will show a 500 error when trying to access the site or any CGI scripts. We will be keeping you posted here with more information as soon as it is available. Thank you for your patience.

We recently experienced an issue on our servers relating to permissions and some PHP functionality. A system update caused an incompatibility with our architecture. The cause was a security patch that did not display any such irregularities during testing. All hands are currently working to revert this issue across the affected shared servers and reseller servers alike.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the problem we have been left with a few issues that will need to be manually corrected to restore functionality for all users. Because a large number of sites have been affected, there is currently a longer than usual wait time for support, both in tickets and by phone.
To help expedite matters, we have included below some links to instructions for our moderate to advanced users to help themselves if they are in an urgent or critical situation and cannot wait for support.

The source of the issue seems to have been identified. A chown script appears to failed during this patch, resulting in the current situation.
Because chown/chmod does not change the file access date, identification was significantly impaired.
At this time, rollbacks are beginning and we'll continue to update as both investigation and restoration continue. -

Does this include the following error message: ?
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@rcgroup.co.il and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have the same problem, in my case it was caused by (unnecessary) group write permission on some files, it can be easily seen in the error log list in cPanel. After removing group writes, the problem disappeared.

a2s48 doesn't work correctly. Did you do something with this www server ? It works fine, but today 2 hours ago it just stop to work correctly. There are problems with links, if you click any links it always shows just first page. Everything works well, but today just stoped.
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
a2s48 problem with links on websites spojnik.com and harleyempousa.com.
I just did something with spojnik.com, but it;s no perfect, because some of features don't work. I can't leave my website like this.
problem is with harleyempousa.com and you can see where exactly is a problem. Look:
http://www.harleyempousa.com/contact....
and http://www.harleyempousa.com/events.html
and http://www.harleyempousa.com/de/home
There are 3 pages, but there are exactly the same -> it's soooo bad !!!!! What did you do today that it doesn't work !!! -
-
Can you please just run this command in each user's public_html:
find . -exec chmod ugo+x {} \;
That will add execute permissions to everything and at least get my site up for the time being. This is AMATEUR HOUR.-
This is very close to what is being executed right now. The scope of the issue means a user by user sweep is taking significant time.
*For the curious public_html is currently getting the following:
chown -R user:user *
chmod -R 000 *
chmod -R u+rwX *
chmod -R go+rX * -

For my issue it doesn't work

Hey Luis,
I don't use a2 for e-mail so I can't speak to that. This account is on box number 57 (a257s) but I have an account on (a2)60(s) which doesn't use cgi (php is working ok although there are intermittent slowdowns).
What is troublesome is that the ssl box is still totally hosed and I get redirected to some guy named Aaron Deutsch who appears to have a blog.
BTW, I was logged in to a shell prompt yesterday when I got a system message that cpanel had been upgraded. That was just before all hell broke loose.

Thomas C.
I am getting some other customer's blog when I try to hit my database via SSL. It is weird. Otherwise, changing the permissions string to 0755 on my cgi scripts got everything working - on a std http (port 80) connection.
So .. If you are not using SSL you should be able to run cgi. Maybe double check that your scripts are executable (chmod 755 *.cgi). Mine are were owned by me.nobody and I reset em to me.me with the same shell script I used to set the permissions.
good luck,

Email is still down on a2s52. We're also seeing some filetypes being served with the wrong mime type which is breaking our CSS.
To me, it appeared that the server was under attack this morning. Several thousand apparently malicious commands were listed by `ps`.
We're now at 6 hours of downtime. Email has been completely stalled for a couple hours and our site hasn't worked since noon eastern. No reply to our tickets either. -
-
a2s56 is now encountering problems! It's been fine all day, and now it's pooched. WTF is going on over there?

Looks like nothing PHP is working. Did you mess with the Apache configs?
No matter which browser or which system (including my phone) I try PHP from on 56, The browser tries to SAVE my PHP files.

My client also got bitten by this issue - and to add insult to injury, zen cart is dumb enough to panic and announce it to the world that the permissions are insecure. I was able to fix it myself before I realized it was a hosting-created issue, and was concerned that there had been a system compromise of some sort.
It is very frustrating trying to explain to my non-technical client why a file changed on the server for no good reason and was scaring her customers away, and choking her primary source of income! We have come to depend on a2hosting as a service provider and while we understand mistakes do happen, this was a real facepalm moment.
As I'm sure everyone here has learned, large sweeping recursive file permission changes will break (and did break) Zen Cart and any other paranoid web app that requires permissions be "just so".
In my opinion as a fellow sysadmin, a good rule to live by is that chmod should never be allowed as part of a management script without extreme necessity and scrutiny.
And looks like after I fixed it, it broke again! So sounds like you guys are still trying to get it right. -

If somebody knows when a2s48 will be working correctly (*.spojnik.com, harleyempousa.com, etc.), because I have tried to change owners and permissions on harleyempousa.com and it gave nothing. I think that there is bigger problem - I mean something more with www server (apache) and etc.

mebody saying that you had 5 years without incidents, but I am having problems since the beginning of 2011! And last year they took two weeks to solve a simple setup problem (statistics did not work) It seems to me we are speaking of two different companies/services here, but lets do the following: I will wait until end of this month, top. In the meantime I transfered some client to other server (ironic: server in Italy and I did not trust them because they were Italian, but they are working now!) And at the end of this month I will decide how (and if) to proceed

Following up on ticket number #ENF-612556. I was told last night about 11pm that everything was fixed. I responded immediately that the site was still not working. No response yet.
I finally figured out the problem on my own. The site was running PHP 5.3.1 on a2s36 before all the chaos began. Yesterday around 4pm PHP was upgraded to 5.3.4. But the builder did not include Postgres support. The site uses Drupal, Postgres, and requires PHP 5.3. So I'm dead in the water until PHP is fixed.-
JD, I'm going to look into this immediately.
-
-
Site is still not fully operational. It appears they added Postgres support, but there are still problems. The database fails to update on certain queries because of this error:
Query failed: ERROR: could not load library /usr/lib64/pgsql/plpgsql.so: /usr/lib64/pgsql/plpgsql.so: undefined symbol: PinPortal -
-
-
-
-
And the rest of us when we will get a response!!!!!!. since yesterday my sites were offline then up and since my emails don't work, and appears this error:
"There was an error sending your message: Failed to add recipient: titan@-somedomain-.com [SMTP: Invalid response code received from server (code: 451, response: Temporary local problem - please try later)]"
I can do nothing about it, since has to be resolve on your side, my ticket XPD-861653.
I can deal with a few hours but this 24 hours with problems it's very very bad thing. The funny thing is this our fault for not setting a backup server trusting your service.- view 5 more comments

Then you already have the answer, book a server elsewhere, install wordpress, copy over files and DB backup and you are set, just put an html redirector while the DNS replicates.

nearly there. this would be "one shot replica". I was more thinking to a continuous replica instead. something like a fail-over cluster, but in a more amateur way :-)

a2s32 all versions of php above 5.2.9 fail to work properly;
/cgi-bin/php-wrap -> freezes in shell
/usr/local/php53/bin/php-cgi -> permission denial for session directory (no matter where it is located and no matter with which permissions set
Also Cpanel adds errors to .htaccess; correct ones:
php 5.2.9
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php
php 5.3.1 (with symbolic link to /usr/local/php53/bin/php-cgi in cgi-bin)
Action php-cgi /cgi-bin/php-cgi
AddHandler php-cgi .php .htm
other versions:
Action php-cgi /cgi-bin/php-cgi
Action application/x-httpd-php-alt /cgi-bin/php-wrapper

To those talking about lawsuits... really???
I've had 5 AMAZING years with A2Hosting. Granted 2 days of downtime is unacceptable for a business standpoint and for the sake of my customers I may have to consider a new hosting solution, but in five years I've never experienced more than an hour of downtime with them. In the grand scheme of things A2Hosting has done very well by me and I'm willing to give them the chance to make this right. I wouldn't mind seeing my next month's bill disappear. That'd be fair.
Class action lawsuits rarely benefit anyone except the lawyer anyway... so the fact that the lawyer is suggesting it makes complete sense!- view 2 more comments

Right now everything is working, TY, about an hour ago Cpanel was not working and I still am very concerned about the other email problem en a2s36 coming back every few hours, we still havent had a final response to that issue and response has been very slow. Sorry for being so vocal, I try to do it in the best interest of all.

I am confused now. one hour in 5 years? I am the only one having problem in the last 2 months? it is not just the last two days.
As per the communication: take the live chat premature death... good sign, isn'it?
again.. 2 weeks is a fair amount of time to take the decision about leaving the ship. but as regards the "bully tactics": I take you did not pay three years in advance.... is not bullying, is about protecting your interests, mate!-
I respect you right to sue them for lost business etc, but certainly this is not the place to discuss that, the support forum.
-
-
I'm no friend of the moderator, just a customer who knows people make mistakes and it's their reaction to them that proves the quality of their character. And A2Hosting remains classy to the end in my opinion. They could certainly be a little more vocal on these forums, but where do you want them to spend there time... fixing our problems or in here feeding the trolls?
I meant one hour at a time, so sorry for the confusion on that point. That's happened a couple of times, but in 5 years I can still count them in my fingers. Considering what A2Hosting charges that's a pretty positive statistic. I think if anyone is expecting 100% uptime you're better off going elsewhere and paying the steep premium for that last .1% of perfection. -

re communication: I reviewed my tickets since December 2010. Averageone per week. plus this nightmare week. also the answers time went down from one-two hours to over 24. most of the times the problem self-healed because the automatic scripts. lets be pragmatic then: when you say "spending time fixing our problems" what do you have in mind? sorry if this thread sounds confusing, but my last two posts were deleted by the moderators, I hope it would make sense anyway

Was a2s59 also affected? It looks as yes to me.
Also, what is the correct way of using custom php.ini file with newly upgraded PHP 5.3?
The way described in KB makes HTTP 500:
AddHandler php-cgi .php
Action php-cgi /cgi-bin/php-cgi
I found it works fine with:
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php
Action application/x-httpd-php53 /cgi-bin/php-wrapper
The question is, it is correct & final or it will be changed back to what is in KB? Thanks. -
